Two friends are coming to visit today, and then the husband on Sunday. It will be more action than I've seen in a long time, and am concerned that I'm just not up to it! Nausea seems to be clearing up, right on schedule, which is actually a little weird. One morning you feel like crap, you feel like crap for weeks and weeks, and then *poof* gone. Makes you think you might have imagined it (except for those moments when it creeps up on you from nowhere). And it's a pretty non-Fourth Fourth this year: half of our friends are out on the road working, so no big BBQ, and I'm ill-equipped for hosting anything, so a pretty laid back day indeed. I think I might have to make some Virgin Mary's and pretend that worchestershire sauce and horseradish makes me drunk. PAAAARRRRR-TY!
As to the holiday itself, I will be very happy when our civil rights are returned, we leave Iraq, and our government quits making backroom deals for "our own good" as though we are too stupid to know what's good for us. Genetically modified crops? No, really, not interested. Deals made for the rebuilding of Iraq through Halliburton? Yes, looks extremely suspect to me. Men held months without trial under vague suspicions while being Middle Eastern? Looks positively corrupt to me, who always learned that we have a right to a fair and speedy trial, to council, and to not be tortured.
Our country, founded on some of the most sound governing principles in the world, is watching as those principles are eroding away. Perhaps I'm not proactive when it comes to my government, but I vote, I pay taxes, I speak up when I'm disgruntled, and I am saddened by the criminal neglect with which our current government views these principles. So that's my patriotic blather for the day. I wish that our government felt it was their duty to uphold these laws and guiding principles, but instead they clearly feel the moral imperative to bend them when they don't suit their needs.
