I totally agree; I mention that the birds can adapt--that it's us that seem to be completely incapable of change. Or so completely obsessed with change that we never heed our own warnings.

I'm cool with that. The birds can adapt, god knows the cats will. Us, up in the air! Will Homo Sapiens Sapiens make it? Something will. It might not be us, though!

Ok, you have wandered into my territory. as a harborer of 1 ex serial killer( he is now blind and a tad loopy), I just wanted to point one thing out. Yes it is true that are feline friends due indeed ravage local bird populations, but that is how evolution works, and yes we did bring them here, but in my eyes that is not all that different than one land bridges became available as seas and oceans came and went.
Species entering new ecosystems and screwing with them for a time is kind of the way it goes. Certain birds could very well go extinct, but others will adapt to the new challenges and flourish..granted it will probably not be in our lifetime, these things take so long, and much like your dad said, we are but a blip.
You are quickly becoming one of my favorite writers Q, keep it up.

Hi Q, It's a kind of comfort to know that all species that can't adapt will become extinct--even us. Our span of dominance so far is much less, time-wise, than the dinosaurs, not to mention the cockroach--of course their personal habits were/are no less savage and voracious than ours, but they were not gifted with opposable thumbs. And on an even larger scale, doesn't it seem presumptuous to think a universe as vast as our information tells us we inhabit, would even notice the blip out at the edge of our middle-sized galaxy? Waiting for Big Daddy to rescue us seems a big waste of time, and only feebly excuses us from attempting to take care of ourselves. As I was listening to NPR just before I got up this morning, I felt so sorry for my generation's legacy to yours, and Milo's, and the ones to come. I apologize, on behalf of what on the series Deadwood that I've been watching are referred to as "Hoopleheads." Don't know what it means, but it sounds right. Love, Dad
