Have Fun, Dammit!

We went to OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) yesterday because I’ve heard good things about their interactive area for tots under 5. But the men-folk have been ill and I’ve been plagued by insomnia, so it was probably doomed from the beginning.

I am so easily excited by events like this. I get these ridiculous expectations, without taking into account that the bun is literally incapable of appreciating these things yet, cold or no cold. And when he is more fascinated by the suburbanites than the monkeys at the zoo, I always feel disappointed.

So it was pretty pathetic when I stuck my 10-month-old baby in a sand pit, and he just sat there, looking at me questioningly, wondering why I was torturing him. And my husband, good sport that he is, just sat on the edge blowing snot into Kleenex waiting for me to get my yaya’s out.

So I dragged them from one exhibit to the next, while they each in turn dutifully played with crap they couldn’t care less about until I felt that our membership fees for the day had been well-spent.

For my part, I knew that I should have just given in, but somehow I hung on. And of course we had far more fun when we got home and ate homemade macaroni and cheese.

It’s a lesson that I hope I learn well, but I’m not counting on it. Christmas is, after all, right around the corner.
