This friend of ours has been working on our house for free on and off for the last several weeks out of the goodness of his heart, and (he says) because “I’ll go completely insane if I’m not doing anything, so you’re helping me more than I am you.” Nice line, but I don’t buy it. Anyway, we’ve tried to offer him some sort of compensation, but he won’t take anything except burritos.

Our house wouldn’t be finished until 2006 without him. The contractor (another friend doing way too much work for too little compensation) would be flying solo, so we owe them both big.

But Bumba loves “Maakies” comic strip, and showed me this particular one that he was going to get tattooed on his leg last year. As the only token of repayment I could think of, my husband and I decided to buy him the original, and it arrived today. It’s beautiful! It’s warped, sick, completely wrong, and elegantly executed. The drawing style is reminscent of Windsor McKay’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland” and “Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend,” but with an even more sinister, bizarre and delinquent edge. What’s not to like?\

I wish we could all have such good ahht in our lives…
